F1 Hungary 2022: Some observations

Grip, white tires, pit stops, spins, and some other details on the race

This year, I visited the Hungaroring for the Formula One race, an exciting time. During the race, and in the summaries I watched, some items screamed for more information. So in this article, I will treat some of them. It will not be a summary of the race but an in deep view on some interesting aspects. For telemetry analysis, the FastF1 package is used.

We will ook at:

  • Grip difference between Ferrari and Red Bull
  • The 360 degrees spin of Verstappen
  • The white tire of Ferrari
  • Gain time during pit stops

So let’s get started!

Grip, grip and more grip

As we were sitting at the chicane (turn 5 and 6) it seemed that the Ferrari had way more grip in this corner than other cars. It is not something you notice on TV, but at the side of the track it just looked like the Ferrari’s were quicker through the chicane than, for example, the Red Bulls. Is this thru?

Let’s look at the telemetry data in this corner for Leclerc and Verstappen for their fastest laps in the race. The chicane is located around 2300 meters from the start. The graph below shows the telemetry between 200 and 2500…
